Frequently asked questions
How can I ask another question?
You can reach me through my contact page. I am happy to help with questions about an artwork.
Where can I see your artwork in person?
My work has been selected for exhibitions and galleries across the UK, including the Ironbridge Printmakers Open, where Where the Light Lingers received an Essdee award in 2026.
I share news of upcoming exhibitions, new artwork and behind-the-scenes glimpses of my printmaking through my website, newsletter and social media.
What inspires your artwork?
Much of my inspiration comes from the natural world, particularly trees, coastlines, changing light and water.
But memories are just as important.
A familiar harbour, an old vehicle, a favourite landscape or somewhere visited years ago can all spark an idea.
I'm interested in the connections we make with places and the feelings they bring back.
Sometimes it's not simply what we see in a picture, but what it reminds us of, that makes it special.
Do you deliver outside the UK?
Yes! I'm delighted to offer international shipping.
You can order directly through my website from overseas, and the available shipping options and costs will be calculated at checkout.
Please be aware that international orders may be subject to customs duties, import taxes or other charges imposed by the destination country.
How much is UK delivery?
Delivery is free on all UK orders.
There are no additional UK shipping charges at checkout.
What happens if I change my mind about a purchase?
I want you to be happy with your artwork.
If you change your mind about an online purchase, you will normally have 14 days from receiving your order to notify me that you wish to cancel.
Full details, including how to arrange a return, can be found in my Returns & Refunds Policy.
How will my artwork be packaged?
Every original print is carefully packaged to protect it during its journey to you.
I take great care when preparing orders because I want your artwork to arrive safely and in excellent condition.
Can I buy your artwork online?
Yes. You can browse my collections and purchase available original linocuts directly through my website, Art by Joanne Spencer.
Each artwork's product page includes its dimensions, edition size, price and availability.
Where are you based?
I'm an independent British artist and printmaker based in Corsham, Wiltshire, England.
I create my original reduction linocuts by hand, drawing inspiration from nature, coastlines, landscapes, familiar places and moments of nostalgia.
Can I buy your artwork as a gift?
Of course! Original artwork makes a thoughtful gift, particularly when it reminds someone of a favourite place, a special memory or something they love.
If you're choosing a print for someone else and would like a little guidance, please get in touch. I'm always happy to help.
How should I care for my original linocut?
Like all original artwork on paper, your linocut deserves a little care.
I recommend displaying it away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity and sources of heat.
Using acid-free mounting materials and UV-protective glazing will help preserve your artwork for years to come.
What size are your prints?
The dimensions shown on my product pages refer to the hand-printed image area, not the overall size of the paper.
For example, a 30 × 30 cm linocut will have additional paper surrounding the printed image.
When framing, I recommend leaving approximately 1.5 cm of the surrounding paper visible so that the signature, title and edition number can be seen.
Do your prints come framed?
My original linocuts are sold unframed, allowing you to choose a mount and frame that suit your home and personal style.
I recommend using a professional framer who can help you choose materials that will protect your artwork.
What is a reduction Linocut?
A reduction linocut is an original print created from a single piece of lino.
I carve away parts of the block, apply ink and print a layer of colour onto paper. I then carve away more of the same block before printing the next colour.
This continues until all the colours have been printed and the artwork is complete.
It’s a process that requires patience, planning and a fair bit of trust that everything will come together!
Are your linocuts original works of art or reproductions?
Every reduction linocut I create is an original work of art, not a reproduction of a painting or a digitally printed image.
Each impression is printed by hand from the lino block I've carved myself.
Although several impressions may be produced within an edition, each is an original print in its own right.
I don't use print-on-demand or giclée reproduction to produce my linocut editions.
What does limited edition mean?
Each linocut is produced in a small, predetermined edition, usually of 10 or fewer prints.
Because I use the reduction method, the lino block is gradually destroyed as the artwork develops. Once the final layer has been carved and printed, it's impossible to return to the original block and print the edition again.
When an edition sells out, that's it. There won't be another.
Are all your prints exactly the same?
Not quite, and that's part of what makes hand-printing special.
Although each impression is created from the same block, tiny variations in ink coverage, texture and registration can occur.
These subtle differences are part of the character of an original handmade print.
Are your prints signed and numbered?
Yes. Every original reduction linocut is signed, titled and numbered by me.
For example, 3/8 means you have the third numbered impression from an edition of eight.
